The short answer: usually yes
A dead smart key battery is inconvenient, but on most modern vehicles it does not strand you. Carmakers know coin cells die, so they build in a backup way to unlock and start the car even when the fob cannot broadcast its normal signal. The key still carries its chip, and the car can read that chip up close even with no battery power in the fob.
So in most cases the answer is yes, you can still drive. The trick is knowing how your specific vehicle wants you to do it, because the backup method varies between unlocking the door and starting the engine.
How the backup start trick works
To get in, almost every smart key hides a metal emergency blade that slides out of the fob and unlocks the driver's door by hand. Once inside, most push-to-start cars let you start the engine by holding the fob against a marked spot, often the start button itself, a slot, or a tray, then pressing the brake and the button. Holding the dead fob right against that spot lets the car read the chip directly.
Your owner's manual shows the exact backup location for your model, since it differs from one carmaker to the next. If you are not sure, look for a key symbol near the start button or a small tray in the center console. Once the engine is running, keep it running until you can replace the battery, because a restart may need the same trick again.
What to do next and when to call
Driving with a dead fob is fine for getting home or to a store, but it is not something to rely on for long. Replace the coin cell as soon as you can, since you do not want to repeat the backup routine every time you start the car. Carry a known-good spare battery in your glovebox so you are ready next time.
If the backup trick does not start your car, the fob may have failed rather than just lost battery power, or the car may not be detecting the chip. A mobile locksmith can test the fob, replace the battery, and program a new fob if yours has worn out. If you are stuck and the backup method is not working, call us and we will come to you.
