My Key Turns but Won't Start the Car

When the key turns but the engine will not catch, the cause is often a chip the car no longer recognizes or a simple electrical issue. Here is how to tell them apart.

What this symptom usually means

If the key physically turns the cylinder but the engine will not start, the lock and blade are doing their job. The problem is almost always electronic: the car is not getting the signal it needs to allow the engine to run, or it is refusing to start because the immobilizer does not trust the key.

Watch the dashboard the moment you turn the key. A security or immobilizer light that stays on or flashes is a strong clue that the chip in your key is not being read. If the dash stays dark or the engine cranks but never fires, the cause may lean more toward power, fuel, or a no-crank electrical issue instead.

Immobilizer and chip problems

Most cars built from the late 1990s on use a transponder chip that the immobilizer has to recognize before it allows the engine to start. If you are using a copy that was never programmed, a key with a damaged chip, or a key the car has somehow stopped trusting, you will get a turn with no start.

A worn ignition ring or antenna around the cylinder can also fail to read a perfectly good chip. In that case even your original key may start working intermittently before it stops being read at all. A locksmith can test whether the chip is being seen and reprogram or replace the key as needed.

When it is not the key at all

Plenty of no-start situations have nothing to do with the key. A weak or dead battery, corroded terminals, a bad starter, an empty tank, or a blown fuse can all leave you turning the key with nothing to show for it. Listen for whether the engine cranks. A strong crank with no start points one way, while a single click or silence points another.

If you are not sure, it is worth a quick check of the basics before assuming the worst. When the cause does turn out to be the key or immobilizer, that is exactly the kind of work a mobile locksmith handles on site, so call us and we will come to you.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my key turn but the engine will not start?

The most common reason is that the immobilizer is not recognizing the chip in your key, often shown by a flashing security light. It can also be a battery, starter, or fuel issue unrelated to the key. Checking whether the engine cranks helps narrow it down.

Can a locksmith fix a key the car no longer recognizes?

Yes. We can test whether the chip is being read, reprogram a key the car should already trust, or cut and program a fresh key so the immobilizer accepts it. We confirm the right approach by your year, make, and model.
