Why the car cannot find the fob

Push-to-start cars constantly look for a trusted fob inside the cabin. The most common reason the car cannot find it is a weak fob battery. Because proximity sensing draws more power than the buttons, the hands-free detection often fails first while the lock and unlock buttons still seem to work.

Signal interference is another cause. A fob stored next to a phone, a laptop, or other electronics can be masked, and a low car battery can weaken the whole keyless system. Where the fob sits in the cabin sometimes matters too.

The backup start trick

Most push-to-start vehicles have a backup for a dead fob. The owner manual usually points to a marked spot, often the start button itself or a tray or cupholder, where you hold the fob so the car can read the chip up close. Then press the brake and the start button as normal.

If that gets the car started, treat it as a warning that the fob battery is low and replace it soon. If the backup spot still does not work, the fob itself may have failed rather than just the battery.

When to call a locksmith

If a fresh battery and the backup start spot do not solve it, the fob may need to be replaced and programmed, or the keyless system may need a closer look. A mobile locksmith can supply a new fob, program it to your car, and confirm the system is reading it correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my car detect my key fob?

A weak fob battery is the usual cause, since proximity detection fails before the buttons do. Interference from nearby electronics or a low car battery can also be the reason. Replacing the coin battery is the first and cheapest thing to try.

How do I start my car if it cannot read the fob?

Most push-to-start cars let you hold the fob against a marked backup spot, often the start button or a tray, then press the brake and the button. Check your owner manual for the exact location for your model.

Can a locksmith program a new push-to-start fob?

Yes, on many vehicles we can supply and program a new fob on site. For some newer or luxury models certain cases are dealer-level, and we will tell you honestly which applies before we head out.
