Do I Need to Tow My Car to the Dealer?

For most car key work, towing to the dealer is unnecessary because a mobile locksmith comes to the vehicle and cuts and programs keys on the spot.

Why a tow is usually avoidable

Dealers often ask you to tow the car in because they program keys at the shop. A mobile locksmith works the other way around: we bring the equipment and the keys to wherever your car is parked, so the vehicle never has to move.

That applies to spare keys, most all-keys-lost jobs, fob programming, and many ignition issues. If the car is sitting in your driveway, a lot, or on the side of the road in Palm Beach County, we can usually come to it and finish there.

When moving the car is unavoidable

A few situations genuinely need the car at a shop. If your specific vehicle is one of the rare dealer-only programming cases, the dealer needs it there. And if there is a mechanical failure beyond the key, such as a seized ignition that needs deeper repair, the car may need to go to a shop for that part of the work.

Even then, we tell you honestly before any tow so you are not paying to move a car that we could have handled in place.

Call before you call a tow truck

The cheapest first move is a quick phone call with your year, make, model, and what is happening. We can almost always tell you whether it is a simple mobile fix or a true dealer case before you spend a dime on towing.

Because we are available around the clock, we can often reach you the same day. That usually means no tow bill and no dealer wait, just a key made on site.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really make a key without me towing the car anywhere?

For most vehicles, yes. We are mobile and come to your car to cut and program keys on site, including many all-keys-lost jobs. Only rare dealer-only models or a separate mechanical failure would require moving the car.

The dealer told me to tow it in. Should I get a second opinion?

It is worth a quick call to us first. Dealers default to towing because they work at the shop, but most key work can be done where the car sits. We will tell you honestly if your specific car truly needs the dealer.

What if my car has a mechanical problem too?

If something beyond the key has failed, like a badly seized ignition needing deeper repair, that part may need a shop. We handle the key and lock side on site and let you know clearly if anything else requires a different visit.
