Why the door works but the ignition does not
The door lock and the ignition cylinder are separate locks that the same key operates. They wear at different rates because the ignition is turned far more often and under more load. Over time the ignition cylinder can wear enough that the key no longer lines up its tumblers, even while the less-used door lock still accepts it fine.
This is actually a helpful clue. When the key opens the door but will not turn the ignition, the key is usually fine and the ignition cylinder is the worn part that needs attention.
A few things to check
First rule out a locked steering wheel by rocking the wheel gently while you apply light pressure to the key. Confirm the shifter is fully in park, since the interlock can block the cylinder. If those are not the issue and the door still works while the ignition will not turn, the cylinder is the likely cause.
Try a spare key in the ignition if you have one. If the spare also opens the door but will not turn the ignition, that further points to the cylinder rather than the key being the problem.
