Making a key from nothing
Losing every key feels like a dead end, but it is a routine job for an automotive locksmith on most vehicles. We do not need an existing key to start. Instead we read the cut from the lock cylinder or generate it from your VIN, then cut a fresh blade that turns your locks.
Cutting the blade is only half the work. The new key also has to be programmed so the immobilizer trusts it. We use equipment that can teach the car a brand-new key even when no key is present to begin the process.
How we recover the cut and the code
There are a few ways to produce the correct blade. We can decode the door lock or ignition mechanically, or use your vehicle identification number to look up the factory key code and cut to it. Both produce a key that fits your specific locks.
For the electronic side, we connect to the car and, depending on the system, either program through the diagnostic port or work at the module level to recover the data needed. The right method depends on your make, model, and year.
What to have ready and what to expect
Have your photo ID and proof that the vehicle is yours, such as the registration or title. Because making a key with no original means full access to your car, we confirm ownership before we begin, for your protection and ours.
All-keys-lost takes longer than copying a spare, but for most vehicles we finish on site in one visit in West Palm Beach. A few newer or luxury models are dealer-level by design, and we are upfront when yours is one of them.
